Transmitted mutated coronavirus — Denmark seals off mink communities

Denmark’s Prime Minister Frederiksen sees himself forced to take a drastic step: a lockdown will be issued for the North Jutland region. A mutated form of the coronavirus was found in mink in the area. Several people have already been infected.  Concerned about the spread of a mutation of the coronavirus that has occurred in mink, the Danish government is issuing far-reaching restrictions in the North Jutland region. Local public transport will be discontinued in seven municipalities, and the almost 280,000 residents are urged to stay in their own municipality. Students in the fifth to eighth grade are to be taught remotely from Monday, the same applies to students of further educational institutions, as the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced.

Coronavirus mutates Denmark has all mink slaughtered

The municipalities of Hjørring, Frederikshavn, Brønderslev, Jammerbugt, Thisted, Vesthimmerland and Læsø are affected by the restrictions. Restaurants, pubs and other places have to close there from Saturday, but may offer take-away. Sports halls, swimming pools and fitness studios will be closed from Monday. Danes and foreign visitors were encouraged to stay away from the area. Trains and buses should no longer cross the borders to the regions. “The world’s eyes are on us,” said Frederiksen. It is a “real cordon”, a real lockdown, of the region. This is necessary because a mutated coronavirus brings with it the risk of influencing the effects of an upcoming vaccine. All citizens in the affected communities are asked to take a corona test. Frederiksen announced on Wednesday that the virus had mutated in Danish minks and had been transmitted to humans. Therefore, all minks in the country are now being killed — there are several million animals whose fur is used, among other things, for fur coats.

No more dangerous than other coronaviruses

Denmark is the world’s largest producer of mink fur. The country currently has 1,139 breeding farms and around 15 to 17 million mink, a particularly large number in North Jutland. As reported by the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the country exported mink skins worth almost two billion euros in the record year 2013 alone. According to this, around 6,000 people work in the industry. The killing of the animals is now tantamount to closing the industry. So far, the mutated virus has been found in twelve people in Denmark, including eleven from North Jutland. The technical director of the Danish health institute SSI, Kåre Mølbak, underlined that this virus is no more dangerous than other coronaviruses. The risk, however, is that it is more resistant to antibodies.
