Seoul Allegations North Korea Kills and Burns South Koreans

For some time now, South Korea has been missing an employee of the fisheries authority. His shoes are found on a patrol boat. In the meantime there is speculation about an escape to North Korea. Now there is intelligence information on the fate of the officer — and a bad suspicion. North Korean security forces shot a South Korean official in an incident in the state’s marine area, according to Seoul. As the South Korean Ministry of Defense announced, the 47-year-old employee of the fisheries authority disappeared from his patrol boat under unclear circumstances and then ended up in North Korean waters. The man was then shot by North Korean security forces, said the Defense Ministry in Seoul on the basis of the analysis of intelligence information. His body was then cremated in North Korea. The South Korean Ministry called the incident “egregious”. All responsibility for the incident rests with North Korea.

According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, there is information that North Korea burned the official’s body after the shooting as a measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The commander of the US troops stationed in South Korea, Robert Abrams, said two weeks ago that members of a North Korean special force had received an order to shoot possible smugglers from China to prevent the coronavirus from being introduced. According to the Ministry, the man had been traveling near the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong before he disappeared. According to media reports, the man’s shoes were found on the patrol boat. This sparked speculation that he might have tried to venture into North Korea. In July, a North Korean who fled south three years ago secretly returned to North Korea across the heavily secured border. Tensions between the two Korean states have increased significantly since the failure of a summit meeting between North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in February of last year. Since then, negotiations between the United States and North Korea about dismantling the North Korean nuclear program have been on hold.
