Rockies manage just two hits as they squander Kyle Freeland’s quality start vs. Astros

Rockies lefty Kyle Freeland let out a primal scream — with some words unprintable for a family newspaper — at the end of the sixth inning Monday night.

Freeland, who thought he was being squeezed by home plate umpire Rob Drake, put a passionate exclamation point on his fifth quality start in a row.

Too bad the Rockies’ offense didn’t display that same kind of power and energy at Houston’s Minute Maid Park in a 2-1 loss to the Astros. The Rockies managed just two hits as they fell for the sixth time in their last eight games.

Right-hander Brandon Bielak dominated Colorado for six innings before he was pulled because he’s still building up his pitch count. Though he walked four, Bielak allowed just one hit — a two-out, solo home run by Trevor Story in the third.

Story, who extended his hitting streak to nine games, powered Bielak’s 3-2, 85 mph cutter 429 feet. It was Story’s seventh homer of the season, and during the streak, he’s batting .400 (16-for-40). The home run was the 130th of Story’s career, tying him with Matt Holliday for 10th in franchise history.

After Bielak departed, Colorado’ offense produced mostly crickets against relievers Brooks Raley, Josh James and Blake Taylor. Charlie Blackmon led off the ninth with a mean line-drive single that ricocheted off Taylor, but Nolan Arenado, Daniel Murphy and Raimel Tapia all flew out quietly.

Houston teed off on Freeland in the first for two runs on three hits — singles by George Springer and Yuli Gurriel and a two-run double that Carlos Correa smoked down the right-field line.

At that point, it looked like it might be a long night for Freeland, but, true to his gritty nature, he shut down the Astros for the next five innings. He struck out five, didn’t walk any, forced nine groundball outs and departed with 2.56 ERA.

Freeland’s fifth consecutive quality start to begin the season is tied with Shawn Chacón (in 2003) for the second-longest quality-start streak to start a campaign in franchise history. Ubaldo Jimenez opened the 2010 season with 14 consecutive.

The Astros threatened Freeland in the third with a two-out double by Alex Bregman and a smash by Gurriel to Story at short. Story flagged down the ball and though he couldn’t prevent an infield hit, Story prevented a run and Correa grounded out to end the inning.

That the Rockies would lose deep in the heart of Texas is not surprising. They have now lost six straight games to the Astros and are 3-14 since the Astros joined the American League in 2013.
