Portugal’s President declares a nationwide Covid-19 emergency

In view of the increasing number of corona infections, the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has declared a health emergency for the second time since spring. The state of emergency should come into force from next week. It is a “very limited and largely preventive measure,” stressed the President. The state of emergency enables the government to impose new measures to contain the corona pandemic. As an example, de Sousa cited traffic restrictions. The social democratic government wants to discuss concrete measures on Saturday evening in an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers. The talks include a nationwide night curfew and public fever measurements in certain locations. Recently, the number of new infections with the corona virus in Portugal rose sharply again: Last week, the country exceeded the mark of 4,000 new infections within a day for the first time.
