Darcy Kuemper was like vintage Patrick Roy on Saturday, making 49 saves in successfully steering the Arizona Coyotes down a treacherous path at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
Outshot 31–11 in the second and third periods, No. 7‑seed Arizona used Kuemper and 27 blocked shots from his teammates to defeat the No. 2 Avalanche 4–2 in Game 3 of their first-round series at the Western Conference hub.
The winning goal was an empty-netter by Taylor Hall, who scored late in the third period to seemingly put the game away. But the Avs got two lucky bounces on the ensuing shift to make it 3–2. Another empty-net goal, this one by Lawson Crouse, sealed Arizona’s victory to cut its series deficit to 2–1.
The Coyotes’ second goal came off the stick of former Avs forward Brad Richardson, who beat goalie Pavel Francouz with a wrist shot late in the second period. Derek Stepan scored in the first period for the Coyotes, who took their first lead of the series 6:29 into the game.
Colorado tied it midway through the second period with a power-play goal by Andre Burakovsky, who scored late in Game 2 to break a 2–2 tie and send the Avs to their second straight win.
In blocked shots, Arizona had 27 of 35.
