Latvia’s Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins is considering another emergency in the Baltic EU country in the fight against the corona pandemic. In view of the significantly increasing number of infections, it was time to think again about declaring a state of emergency, he said after a meeting of the leaders of the ruling coalition of five in Riga. This could allow the government to take measures to contain the virus that it would otherwise not be legally authorized to take. The daily number of infections had recently increased significantly — around 70 percent of all corona cases since the start of the pandemic were registered in October. In addition, the Latvian health system has been chronically underfunded for years.
