Mr. Per­due, a first-term Repub­li­can, nar­row­ly failed to clear 50 per­cent of the vote, send­ing the race to a Jan­u­ary runoff that, along with anoth­er runoff con­test, will prob­a­bly deter­mine which par­ty con­trols the Senate.
