The num­ber of new coro­na infec­tions has risen to a record high in Iraq. For the first time, the Min­istry of Health in Bagh­dad reports more than 5000 new cas­es in one day. 84 oth­er peo­ple died in con­nec­tion with the virus. The num­ber of new infec­tions every day had climbed to the high­est lev­el in the region in Iraq in recent weeks. In total, the author­i­ties have so far reg­is­tered more than 252,100 coro­na cas­es and more than 7,300 deaths in con­nec­tion with Covid-19. Iraq imposed exit restric­tions and sus­pend­ed inter­na­tion­al flights in March, slow­ing the spread of the virus. How­ev­er, after the gov­ern­ment eased mea­sures, the num­ber of dai­ly record­ed cas­es rose again. In the past week, hun­dreds of thou­sands of Mus­lims cel­e­brat­ed the Shi­ite Ashu­ra fes­ti­val in the city of Kar­bala. Iraq is suf­fer­ing from a severe eco­nom­ic cri­sis and the con­se­quences of the fight against the ter­ror­ist mili­tia Islam­ic State (IS). The coro­na pan­dem­ic has exac­er­bat­ed the situation.
