After a tough counting marathon, the Democrat Joe Biden wins the state of Pennsylvania and with it the presidential election in the USA. Incumbent Donald Trump does not acknowledge his defeat. Forecasts by major news media in the US put an end to the period of uncertainty — at least for the time being: They unanimously declared Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden the winner in the key state of Pennsylvania. This means that the Democrat has enough electoral men and women to win the overall presidential election.

The incumbent President Donald Trump does not recognize his electoral defeat, however. “The fact is: the election is far from over,” said Trump. Biden is “wrongly” portraying himself as the winner and is supported by his “media allies”. Biden wrote on Twitter: “America, I am honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country.” He promised to be “a president to all Americans” whether you voted for me or not. Twelve hours earlier he had tweeted: “We may be opponents — but we are not enemies.” The forecasts come from the AP news agency, which traditionally plays an important role in proclaiming the results of the US presidential election, as well as from the “New York Times” and the television stations CNN and Fox News. The former favorite channel of incumbent President Donald Trump has proclaimed the Democrat Biden as the election winner.

This was preceded by a big race to catch up in the counting of votes. Trump was still ahead with more than 600,000 votes in Pennsylvania on Wednesday morning (local time). This was due to the fact that in the east coast state, the votes from election day were first counted — and the majority voted for Trump. The early voters, who were more likely to vote for Biden, were not evaluated until later. In the 2016 election, Trump was able to narrowly prevail in Pennsylvania. He was just 0.7 percentage points ahead of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. The announcement of the election result by CNN and AP is not official — comparable to the “preliminary official final result” of a federal election. However, this practice is common in the United States, where the results of state elections are followed and announced by the major media organizations. The official, official election result will be some time in coming. The further procedure looks like this: On December 14th, the electors meet in the capitals of the individual states to cast their votes. Until then, the incumbent US President Donald Trump would have time to challenge the election result. The results of the election of the “electoral college” must arrive in Washington December 23rd. The new president will be sworn in on January 20th.
