Spain’s capital is gearing up for an emergency: soldiers are supposed to control the curfews. Doctors warn that the intensive care units are filling up. Madrid citizens should avoid heart attacks or car accidents. Even the complete barrier is now in the room. In view of the dramatic increase in corona infections in the Spanish capital, Madrid, the regional government has “urgently” requested soldiers as well as additional police officers and doctors from outside. The military is needed for logistical tasks, the police officers should help enforce restrictions on freedom of movement. And the doctors are needed to treat the sick, reported the newspaper “El País”, citing the regional government.

With almost 700,000 infected people and more than 31,000 corona deaths, Spain is the country in Western Europe hardest hit by the pandemic. A third of all second wave infections are currently in Madrid. Since Monday, 37 areas in six districts and in seven municipalities in the surrounding area with a total of around 850,000 inhabitants have been partially cordoned off. However, people are allowed to leave their residential areas to get to work, school, the doctor or a court summons on often overcrowded public transport, so that experts consider the measures to be inefficient.
Lockdown “last chance”
Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso has announced further restrictions that are not further explained for Friday. Because of the economic consequences, she describes a closure of the entire capital region with 6.6 million inhabitants as only “a last resort”.
