This has nev­er hap­pened before: For the first time in the Unit­ed States, a trans­gen­der politi­cian suc­ceeds in enter­ing the upper house of a state. The Demo­c­rat Sarah McBride will sit in the Sen­ate in Delaware. A trans­gen­der politi­cian can also claim an elec­tion vic­to­ry in Ver­mont. In the US elec­tions, for the first time, an open­ly liv­ing trans­gen­der politi­cian was elect­ed to the upper house of a state: In the east coast state of Delaware, 30-year-old Sarah McBride entered the Sen­ate there with 86 per­cent. This makes her the first female trans­gen­der sen­a­tor in the Unit­ed States. She hopes the elec­tion shows trans­gen­der chil­dren “that our democ­ra­cy is big enough for them too,” wrote the Demo­c­ra­t­ic can­di­date about her elec­tion vic­to­ry on Twit­ter. McBride cam­paigned for the rights of les­bian, gay, bisex­u­al, trans­gen­der and queer peo­ple (LGBTQ). In the past she had com­plet­ed an intern­ship in the White House under ex-Pres­i­dent Barack Oba­ma. McBride won in a heav­i­ly Demo­c­ra­t­ic dis­trict that stretch­es from north­ern Wilm­ing­ton to the Penn­syl­va­nia border.

In the north­ern state of Ver­mont, 26-year-old Tay­lor Small came to the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives there for the Democ­rats. “The nation’s fifth trans­gen­der MP!” She wrote on Twit­ter. For the first time, a trans­gen­der rep­re­sen­ta­tive was elect­ed to a region­al par­lia­ment in 2017, then in Vir­ginia. Trans­gen­der are peo­ple whose gen­der does not match the per­ceived gen­der tem­porar­i­ly or per­ma­nent­ly from birth. The states of Delaware and Ver­mont are tra­di­tion­al­ly demo­c­ra­t­ic. On Tues­day a new pres­i­dent, around a third of the US Sen­ate, the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives, gov­er­nors in eleven states and sev­er­al local par­lia­ments were elect­ed in the USA.
