Sudha David-Wilp: President Trump has definitely defied general expectation. Most people assumed he would be punished on November 3rd for his policies over the past few months. The United States is going through a huge crisis: a pandemic, an economic crisis and social unrest caused by violence against African Americans. It is therefore a bit surprising that so many voters have voted for him.
What was it?
Trump was obviously very effective at portraying Joe Biden as a politician who would lead the country into a complete shutdown. He also convinced many Americans that Biden would not be good for the US economy. He has managed to brand the Democrats as a radical left who would try to redistribute wealth in the United States. And finally, he convinced some voters that it is he who maintains law and order. Still, it doesn’t look like he will stay in the White House right now. As we conduct this interview, we have pending results in several states including Nevada, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia. Do you think Biden will win? I don’t make predictions after 2016, but right now it looks like Joe Biden will prevail. We just have to wait for the result. There is no rule that says that the decision must be clear on the day of the election. Something like this can take time, especially in a pandemic. The good news is that despite the pandemic, so many people voted this year. That is a good sign that our democracy is alive and well.
