Denver mayor traveled for Thanksgiving despite pandemic and Twitter was not happy about it — - today

Den­ver May­or Michael Han­cock asked peo­ple to avoid trav­el­ing for Thanks­giv­ing. And then hopped a flight to Mis­sis­sip­pi to spend the hol­i­day with his wife and daughter.

The hypocrisy — first report­ed by 9News — amounts to an unforced error on the mayor’s part and one that risks dele­git­imiz­ing pleas from pub­lic health offi­cials to try to stop the spread of the surg­ing coro­n­avirus, experts and offi­cials agree.

Han­cock lat­er issued an apol­o­gy: “I rec­og­nize that my deci­sion has dis­ap­point­ed many who believe it would have been bet­ter to spend Thanks­giv­ing alone. As a pub­lic offi­cial, whose con­duct is right­ly scru­ti­nized for the mes­sage it sends to oth­ers, I apol­o­gize to the res­i­dents of Den­ver who see my deci­sion as con­flict­ing with the guid­ance to stay at home for all but essen­tial trav­el,” Han­cock said in a state­ment. “I made my deci­sion as a hus­band and father, and for those who are angry and dis­ap­point­ed, I humbly ask you to for­give deci­sions that are borne of my heart and not my head.”

But in 2020’s court of pub­lic opin­ion, it only made things worse. Twit­ter already had its say.
