In addition to a record increase in corona cases, residents of the Indian capital New Delhi also have to worry about the high level of air pollution. With 7,178 confirmed new infections, the authorities in the metropolis report the highest increase since the beginning of the pandemic and warn that air pollution could worsen the situation. The region around New Delhi has already recorded more than 423,000 corona cases and more than 6,800 people have died. At the weekend, the capital and its suburbs were shrouded in a thick haze. The authorities described the air quality at several measuring stations as “serious”, the worst of six warning levels. The situation is made worse by the burning of crop residues in fields. Farmers do this every late autumn in order to free their fields cheaply for the new sowing — although this has long been forbidden. Experts warn that this could have a negative impact on the course of corona-related respiratory diseases.
