Colorado 82 over Independence Pass reopens to limited traffic

Colorado 82 over Independence Pass has reopened with limited access and alternating traffic, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on either side of the pass will experience alternating traffic flow controlled by flagging personnel, CDOT said in a news release.

The pass closed this week because of the Grizzly Creek fire and safety concerns over heavy traffic volumes as Colorado 82 became an alternate route.

“The combination of heavy traffic, narrow width of the highway in several locations and vehicle length restrictions are creating unsafe travel conditions on Independence Pass,” CDOT said.

Only passenger vehicles, such as cars, SUVs and vans, are allowed. The pass remains closed to commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), camper trailers, recreational or similar vehicles. Campers and recreational vehicles are urged to seek an alternate southern route.

Drivers using the pass should expect slow speeds, lengthy travel times and potential delays of up to two hours, CDOT said.

Travelers should avoid using county or forest roads as alternate routes, because road conditions may not be favorable. The latest official road conditions and closures can be found on online at www.cotrip.org.
