A trio of Colorado Rapids players were called up to the US Men’s National Team on Monday for its December camp. Colorado natives Cole Bassett and Sam Vines, as well as Kellyn Acosta, will head to Florida to prepare for a friendly against El Salvador on Dec. 9.
Bassett is getting his first senior team call-up. The 19-year-old from Littleton had a breakout season, scoring five goals and notching five assists. Bassett scored four goals in four appearances earlier in 2020 while playing for the US U‑20s.
Vines, 21, debuted for the national team earlier this season, getting 77 minutes of playing time in the Americans’ 1–0 win over Costa Rica. Vines played every single minute of Colorado’s regular season and became a more adept attacker, scoring a goal and helping on three.
Acosta has made 23 appearances in red, white and blue, scoring two goals. Acosta had a steady third season in Colorado, tallying the Rapids’ playoff-clinching goal and making 15 starts.
The international schedule is loaded in 2021 with the Nations League, the Gold Cup and World Cup Qualifying. The US U‑23s also hope to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, which were rescheduled from 2020. The congestion should favor opportunities for the three burgundy boys.
