Crews worked in blis­ter­ing heat Wednes­day to beat back wild­fires that ignit­ed across North­ern Cal­i­for­nia, send­ing thou­sands of peo­ple from their homes into smoky air, briefly halt­ing traf­fic on an inter­state and killing a pilot on a fire­fight­ing mission.
