Broncos game balls: Titans kicker Stephen Gostkowski was nearly Denver’s MVP, until he wasn’t

Stephen Gostkowski, Titans K: Think about your worst day at the office, then multiply that by about 1,000. That’s what Monday night was looking like for Gostkowski before the Titans’ final drive of the game. The former Pro Bowler’s line at that point? Three field goal attempts, three misses — and a shanked extra-point that was the difference in a 14–13 affair. But hand it to the 36-year-old veteran: With the game hanging in the balance and the ball at the Denver 7‑yard line with 20 seconds left, Gostkowski split the uprights with the game-winner. Sweet redemption. And possibly even continued employment.

Jeremiah Attaochu, Broncos OLB: Starting in place of the injured Von Miller, Attaochu did his best impression of the Vonster in the first half. It started with the seven-year vet pressuring Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill into an incompletion on his first drop back of the game, and ended with him sacking Tannehill as the Titans were driving at the close of the second quarter. Two plays later, a blocked field goal attempt kept the game tied at 7 going into the break. Unfortunately for the Broncos, Attaochu’s was the only sack of the game.

Josey Jewell, Broncos MLB: Oh, my, how about that hit Jewell put on Derrick Henry at midfield in the third quarter? Maybe the Broncos don’t need Todd Davis after all. The Decorah, Iowa, native is coming off a rough 2019 that saw him slip out of the starting lineup as Alexander Johnson emerged at middle linebacker. Consider Monday night’s eight-tackle night against one of the NFL’s toughest running backs a solid opening salvo.

Noah Fant, Broncos TE: No Courtland Sutton? No problem — at least in the first half. With his Pro Bowl receiver out with a shoulder injury, quarterback Drew Lock turned to fellow 2019 draftee Fant to establish the passing game early. The Iowa product started with three catches for 34 yards, including a 9‑yard touchdown grab that gave Denver an early 7–0 lead, in the first quarter, then tacked on two more receptions for 47 yards in the second quarter. If only that production would’ve continued in the second half: Fant was only targeted once in the first two quarters.

Sam Martin, Broncos P: The Broncos free-agent addition to special teams made a fantastic first impression in his Broncos debut at Mile High. Three times, the 30-year-old veteran pinned the Titans inside their own 20 with his finely tuned directional punting skills. That included a pair of punts in the fourth quarter that forced the Titans to start drives at their 4- and 10-yard lines, respectively. Martin averaged 46.4 yards on five punts overall, including a 56-yarder in the third quarter.
