Broncos game balls: Noah Fant finally sees some targets, and cashes in against Steelers

Noah Fant, Broncos TE: Over the course of four quarters between Weeks 1 and 2, the Broncos’ 2019 first-round selection had one target and zero receptions. Criminal. In Sunday’s second half: five targets, four receptions for 57 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion. Maybe this guy should get more looks?

T.J. Watt, Steelers OLB: The younger brother of J.J. Watt may now be the best pass rusher in the family. Either way, he’ll be in Broncos right tackle Elijah Wilkinson’s nightmares for years to come. The 6‑foot‑4, 252-pound linebacker continually beat Wilkinson off the edge en route to 2.5 sacks and two tackles for loss.

Justin Simmons, Broncos S: If the Broncos need proof why Simmons deserves a long-term deal, they should re a three-play sequence early in the third quarter. First down: Simmons tackle for loss on sweep. Second down: 4‑yard reception. Third-down: One-handed Simmons interception returned into Steeler territory. His final line: eight tackles (one for loss) and the INT.

Diontae Johnson, Steelers, WR: The second-year pass catcher out of Toledo got plenty of opportunities against the inexperienced Broncos secondary and cashed in time and again, hauling in eight receptions for 92 yards, as well as a 28-yard touchdown pass from a scrambling Ben Roethlisberger in the fourth quarter. If not for a penalty flag he also would’ve had a punt return touchdown.

Melvin Gordon, Broncos RB: For the second week in a row, the Broncos’ new back found the end zone in the second half — this time on a 16-yard wheel route that was perfectly placed by QB Jeff Driskel. All told, Gordon gained 84 total yards, including 70 on 19 hard-earned carries against a physical Pittsburgh run defense that kept Saquon Barkley under 10 yards in Week 1.
