London’s famous Tower Bridge got stuck when folded up and was not passable for several hours on Saturday. The reason: technical problems. The middle section of the bascule bridge over the Thames in the center of the British capital can be opened to allow passage for larger ships. In the evening, the bridge was first opened to pedestrians, but not to car traffic, as the authorities announced. The bridge, popular with tourists, was built in the late 19th century. The flaps were originally operated with steam hydraulics. The opening system has been powered by oil and electricity since the 1970s.
