Aurora will have an early voting location open on Sunday, Nov. 1

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office will give federal CARES Act dollars to counties that keep their early voting centers open the Sunday before Election Day, the office announced Thursday.

Adams County is the first to decide to keep a location open that Sunday. The center at Moorhead Recreation Center, 2390 Havana St. in Aurora, will be accessible 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 1, according to the state.

Voting centers in the state have to open for early voting on Oct. 19, but they are not required to be open on Sundays.

“As Secretary of State, I have worked to increase voting access for Coloradans,” said Secretary of State Jena Griswold in a news release. “Early voting options are key to accessible elections, and for a presidential election during a pandemic, it’s important to provide Coloradans with many options to be able to cast their ballot and make their voice heard.”

The NAACP commended Adams County and the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office for the move in the release. State President Rosemary Lytle said it would increase voter participation, particularly among typically disenfranchised communities.
