Even before the judgment of the Constitutional Court, Poland had one of the strictest abortion rights in Europe. With Thursday’s ruling, it is now virtually impossible for women in the country to legally terminate their pregnancy. Thousands of people take to the streets because of it. Thousands of Poles took to the streets after the controversial ruling by the Constitutional Court to tighten abortion law. In several cities in the country, outraged citizens demonstrated against the almost complete ban on abortion. “That means war” and “Sadists, we’ll come for you,” the protesters chanted. Poland’s highest court on Thursday declared a law unconstitutional that allows abortion in the event of a serious malformation of the fetus. Poland already has one of the strictest abortion rights in Europe. The ruling by the Constitutional Court was sharply criticized by the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatovic, among others.

“Yesterday’s decision means a total abortion ban in Poland because 98 percent of legal abortions in Poland involve malformations of the fetus,” said Krystyna Kacpura, head of the Association for Women and Family Planning. Women with limited resources in particular may now be forced to resort to dangerous, illegal abortion methods, she warned. The national conservative ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) has been campaigning for a tightening of abortion law in Poland for years. She wants abortions only to be possible if the life of the pregnant woman is directly threatened or if she has become pregnant as a result of rape or incest.
