US authorities panic – Brain-eating amoeba in tap water

Health authorities in Texas are urgently warning: US citizens in eight communities should from now on only use their tap water to flush the toilet. Apparently, researchers were able to detect an amoeba in it, which in the worst case can lead to death on physical contact. In Texas, health officials have urged residents of eight communities to minimize exposure to tap water. At most, flushing the toilet is allowed. The reason for this is the brain-eating amoeba “Naegleria fowleri”.
If the parasite gets into the nose, it can trigger meningitis and thus lead to death. As CNN reports, a six-year-old boy died in September as a result of an infection with the pathogen. Regional authorities have now assured that the public water system will be disinfected, flushed and then re-examined for the pathogen. The parasite cannot be transmitted from person to person. According to Spiegel, the warning now only applies to the city of Lake Jackson with just under 27,000 residents. The residents are allowed to use the tap water there again. However, you should boil it before drinking and be careful not to get water up your nose while bathing or showering.
