In a nationwide strike in the middle of the Corona crisis, hundreds of thousands of doctors in Spain have called for better working conditions and more recognition. According to the state medical union federation CESM, around 85 percent of the total of 267,000 doctors participated in the work stoppage. However, most doctors only symbolically stopped their work, but continued to treat their patients. In Madrid around 50 doctors in white lab coats protested in front of parliament. Their signs featured a black boot about to trample a group of health care workers. It was the first nationwide doctors’ strike since 1995. In the past few weeks, infections with the coronavirus have skyrocketed in Spain. Last week, Spain was the first EU country with more than a million confirmed corona cases. The virus killed more than 35,000 people in the country.
