According to French President Macron’s statements on Islam, tensions between Paris and Ankara are intensifying. In a televised address, the Turkish head of state Erdogan advises his compatriots not to buy any more French products. In the dispute with French President Emmanuel Macron, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on his compatriots to boycott French products. “From here I appeal to my people. Just don’t pay attention to French brands, don’t buy them,” said Erdogan in a televised address.

Brutal terror in France Beheaded teacher received threats for weeks

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday after the murder of French history teacher Samuel Paty that Islam was in a “crisis”. He also stated that freedom of expression in France also includes the right to caricature the prophet Mohammed. Paty had shown cartoons of Mohammed in class and was killed in the street and then beheaded. Macron’s remarks caused outrage in the Muslim world, with hundreds of people taking to the streets in several countries. In Jordan, Kuwait and Qatar, traders took French goods from their stores in protest on Sunday. Erdogan said at the weekend that Macron should have his “state of mind” examined. He also accused the French president of being hostile to Islam. France sharply condemned the statements and called the French ambassador in Ankara back to Paris for deliberations. The federal government also condemned Erdogan’s allegations against Macron. “These are defamatory statements that are completely unacceptable,” said government spokesman Steffen Seibert. Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas had previously described Erdogan’s verbal attacks as a “new low” in relations with Ankara. Erdogan’s personal attacks are “completely unacceptable,” said Maas in Berlin. The German government had told “our French friends” that “we understand their diplomatic measures very much and that we support them,” said Maas. Germany stands in solidarity with France in view of Erdogan’s personal attacks on Macron, but above all “in the fight against Islamist extremists”. He also emphasized that the fight against Islamist terror should not be equated with racism and Islamophobia. Those who do that are acting irresponsibly and playing into the hands of those who want to divide society. “We will not accept that,” said the SPD politician.
