Kickin’ It with Kiz: He’s Prime, but Deion Sanders can’t carry Mike MacIntyre’s whistle as a football coach

2021 Capitol

Colorado’s 1-11 record the season before coach Deion Sanders arrived was an aberration. Is the fact the Buffs have won at least four games every other year since 2015 still under the radar? Rhetorical question: Who’s comin’? Props to Prime for creating buzz and energy. Hopefully, the success of CU’s program trends upward.

Ron, fact-checker

Kiz; There’s no denying the ability of Prime to attract attention, money and recruits. Bravo to all that. But can we dispense with this nonsense that Sanders is some kind of miracle worker as a football coach? Here’s the truth: In 2013, Mike MacIntyre took over a CU team that not only went 1-11 under Jon Embree, but embarrassed itself by surrendering more than 50 points in five games, including a 70-burger to Oregon. Without the benefit of bringing in his superstar son to play quarterback, MacIntyre quadrupled the Buffs’ win total during his first season in Boulder. Prime might prove to be pure magic. But, so far, he can’t carry MacIntyre’s whistle when it comes to actually coaching football.

At the beginning of this CU football season, I said if the Buffs win four or five games and are competitive in most of the losses, I would be more than happy. And that is exactly what we got with possibly the worst offensive line I’ve ever seen.

Dan, feeling groovy

Kiz: Maybe it’s better to not talk so much smack until you learn how to block. Here’s hoping that lesson has been learned by the fine student-athletes on CU’s campus.

After that 56-14 loss to Washington State, CU is safe knowing Coach Prime is coming back to Boulder next season. The only team that is hiring him away at this point is looking more at selling T-shirts than winning games.

Chris, Colorado proud

Kiz: Prime ain’t ready for sharing the stage with Alabama coach Nick Saban anywhere except on the set of an Aflac commercial. Despite the yada, yada, yada from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, leaving for Texas A&M after one season at CU makes zero sense for Neon Deion. But there’s every reason to believe the Sanders family can carry the Buffs to a bowl game in 2024, and it will be a major disappointment if they fail to do so.

I’m surprised Washington State didn’t hang 70 points on the Buffs. Disappointed Wazzu didn’t run it up.

T.D.F., Huskers fan

Kiz: If misery loves company, maybe Sanders should invite Nebraska counterpart Matt Rhule to Thanksgiving dinner. While the Buffs haven’t won a bowl game since 2004, the Huskers haven’t been to a bowl game since 2016. Admit it: The Buffs and Huskers programs were better together.

And today’s parting shot declares that quarterback Russell Wilson has earned the right to stay as the Broncos’ quarterback. It’s somebody else that needs to get out of Denver.

Tell Kiszla his “much-maligned” phrase to describe Wilson only applies to the comments made in his column. Also: Didn’t Kiszla call for defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s firing? I’ll tell you who needs to be fired: Kiz!
