In the country of around 330 million inhabitants, around 12.7 million infections have been detected since the beginning of the pandemic and more than 261,000 deaths related to an infection have been reported. The day before Thanksgiving, Johns Hopkins University counted over 2,400 Covid-19 deaths within 24 hours. The numbers last looked worse at the end of June.

In his address, he indirectly criticized incumbent Donald Trump for refusing to recognize the election result. “Our democracy was put to the test this year,” said Biden. “In America we have full and fair and free elections.
