After the controversial TV debate with his challenger Biden, US President Trump was sure that he had won the duel. Polls now show the opposite. His Covid 19 illness also apparently does not help him in favor of the voters. According to surveys, US voters’ approval of Donald Trump has collapsed. According to a survey for the “Wall Street Journal” and the TV station NBC, challenger Joe Biden is ahead of the incumbent US president with 53 percent to 39 percent approval. Biden’s lead has widened to 14 percentage points, compared to 8 points last month and 11 points in July – it was the largest gap in the current election campaign at the time. So far, the proportion of Trump supporters towards Biden has never fallen below 40 percent. The Wall Street Journal / NBC poll was conducted among registered voters two days after the TV duel, but before it became known that Trump had tested positive for Covid-19. The controversial behavior of the president in the television debate is therefore likely to be the main reason for the slump in Trump’s approval rating.

As a Reuters / Ipsos survey from October 2 to 3, and thus after the news of Trump’s positive corona test shows, the infection probably also has a negative impact on support for the president. Biden is therefore ten percentage points ahead of Trump. That is an increase of one or two points compared to the previous week’s surveys. Most of the respondents blame Trump himself for his illness. 65 percent of those surveyed are of the opinion that Trump would probably not have been ill if he had “taken the coronavirus more seriously”. The poll shows growing dissatisfaction among Americans with the president’s actions against the pandemic. This proportion rose by 3 points to 57 percent compared to the previous week. Around a third – 34 percent – of those surveyed assume that Trump is telling the truth about the corona virus, 55 percent disagree, and 11 percent are unsure. The presidential and congressional elections will take place on November 3rd. Voting is already underway in some states: According to the University of Florida, 3.1 million US citizens have already cast their votes by postal vote or at the ballot box.
