In view of the high number of corona infections, the government in Spain has declared a nationwide health emergency. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said in a televised address that the state of emergency would apply until the beginning of May next year. In the next few months, a night curfew will apply throughout Spain with the exception of the Canary Islands. Previously, nine of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions had called for the state of emergency to be declared again. The Spanish central government had already declared a health emergency during the first wave of corona infections in March. It lasted until June. The state of emergency was the legal basis for one of the strictest corona lockdowns in the world. During its validity, the Spaniards were only allowed to leave their homes to go shopping or to see a doctor.
