Robust pathogen – How long does coronavirus survive on skin?

Just recently it was shown again how long the coronavirus survives on smooth surfaces. Now a study shows that the virus is also very robust on the skin. It therefore lasts four times longer on humans than the flu virus. So far, droplet infection has been considered the main route of transmission for coronavirus. Virus-containing droplets and smaller aerosols are absorbed through the air while breathing. Nevertheless, it is also possible to become infected through contact with contaminated surfaces. Scientists around the world are researching how high the risk of infection is. Just recently, Australian researchers found that Sars-CoV-2 viruses can survive on smooth surfaces such as cell phone displays or ATMs for up to 28 days – and thus longer than previously assumed. Now, a new study by scientists from the Prefectural University of Kyoto shows: The virus can survive on the skin for a longer period of time – even longer than some flu viruses.

Is the risk lower than expected? The role of aerosols in corona is unclear

Coronaviruses can survive on human skin for up to nine hours. This is the result of a new study by Japanese scientists. In the study, the Japanese research team applied both corona and influenza viruses to human skin to check how long the viruses remained active on it. For comparison: Influenza A type flu viruses survived on the skin for just two hours. In another experiment, the scientists mixed the Sars-CoV-2 virus with mucus to simulate transmission when sneezing or coughing. The result: the viruses remained active on the skin for up to 11 hours. “The nine-hour survival time of Sars-CoV-2 on human skin could mean an increased risk of contact transmission compared to the influenza A virus,” the authors conclude in the study published in the journal “Clinical Infectious Diseases”. The good news: after the researchers applied an ethanol-based disinfectant to the infected areas of the skin, all viruses were completely killed within 15 seconds. Their study results suggested, the researchers say, how important thorough hand hygiene is to prevent the virus from spreading.
