Since the summer, China has only found isolated infections with the corona virus, life is largely normal. In Hebei Province, things have changed for a few days. The authorities are trying to contain the outbreak with rigorous measures. In China, 136 new corona infections have been reported by the authorities. 99 of the new cases were detected in Hebei province, just outside the gates of the Chinese capital Beijing. Overall, the number of infections in Hebei rose to just under 400. It is the largest outbreak in six months.

In the past few days, the Chinese authorities had tightened the measures in Hebei and tested several million people. On Saturday, metro operations in the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang, which has a population of eleven million, were suspended indefinitely, as reported by state media. Buses, taxis and private vehicles are also no longer allowed to leave the city. Since Friday, residents of Shijiazhuang as well as those in the seven million metropolis of Xingtai, 125 kilometers away, are no longer allowed to leave the cities without special permission. All access roads to the two cities have also been blocked, flight connections have been canceled and train traffic has been suspended. The schools in both cities are closed. The authorities in Shijiazhuang are planning further mass tests to expose the chains of infection and to get the situation in the city under control. The origin of the new outbreak is still unclear.
