Relaxation due to Corona postponed – French have to stay at home for New Year’s Eve – today

12-12-Corona

French President Macron sees a maximum of 5000 new infections daily as a condition for easing the corona measures. Currently, however, the numbers are almost three times as high. The consequence: a nationwide curfew that should also apply on New Year’s Eve. Because of the high number of corona infections, the French are not allowed to celebrate the turn of the year outdoors: The government imposed a curfew on New Year’s Eve from 8 p.m., as Prime Minister Jean Castex announced. The opening of cinemas, theaters and museums, originally planned for next Tuesday, will be postponed until at least January. “We have not yet reached the end of the second wave,” said Prime Minister Castex. The nocturnal curfew comes into effect next Tuesday and, contrary to what was initially considered, starts at 8 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. Only on Christmas Eve are people allowed to move freely and go to the traditional midnight mass. Some easing is also being postponed, as Castex said: In addition to cultural institutions such as theaters, this also affects places of worship. The number of participants in mass celebrations should not be increased for the time being, in churches and mosques a row between believers must remain free.
“Risk that the second wave will rise again”

At Christmas people should be able to travel to their families as planned. Castex warned the citizens to celebrate in small groups with a maximum of six adults. Everything must be done “to prevent a third lockdown in the coming months,” he emphasized. The French should also forego larger celebrations on New Year’s Eve. Private firecrackers are not allowed in many places anyway. There are centrally organized fireworks in Paris and other cities. President Emmanuel Macron had made a decrease to a maximum of 5,000 new infections a day a prerequisite for easing before Christmas. Most recently, the number was more than 14,000, but almost three times as high. There is a “risk that the second wave will rise again,” warned Health Minister Olivier Véran. At the end of November, the government initiated the first easing of the strict lockdown that has been in place since the end of October. Since then, all shops have been reopened under hygienic conditions, people are allowed to leave their apartments for a maximum of three hours a day within a radius of 20 kilometers without good reason; previously, walks or jogging tours were only allowed for an hour within a kilometer of the house. But there is one important relief: From next Tuesday, the French no longer have to carry certificates with them during the day to justify their going out at police checks. Violations of the Corona requirements in France face a fine of 135 euros.

Since the lockdown came into force on October 30, the corona key figures had improved significantly: After a high of 60,000, the daily new infections fell visibly. The pressure on the hospitals also eased significantly. A good 3,000 corona patients have recently been treated in the French intensive care units, which corresponds to a good 50 percent utilization. Macron had named 2500 to 3000 intensive care patients as a target value for December 15. The number of deaths, on the other hand, rose massively to 56,648. There is therefore no hope for restaurants and other restaurants that are considered sources of infection: They should remain closed at least until January.
