Portugal under control of the virus mutation

How quickly mistakes in pandemic control can currently lead to the number of cases exploding within a very short time can be seen in Portugal, whose health system is on the verge of collapse. Germany shouldn’t make the same mistakes. Last November, Portugal went into an even milder lockdown than Germany, leaving restaurants and schools open, among other things. The corona measures were extended with a slight tightening and the number of new infections decreased. While the country
still had a 7-day average of more than 6,400 infections on November 20, it was fewer than 3,000 on December 28.

Shortly before, the government had eased Christmas measures to allow family gatherings. Curfews have been moved to the late hours of the night and travel restrictions have been lifted. Only temporarily, as in Germany, New Year’s Eve should end with fun again. But by then it was already too late, the pandemic was already out of control.

Portugal sad leader

The number of new infections almost doubled within a week, on January 16 they had already tripled, and the 7-day average is currently over 11,000 cases. Yesterday, the country registered another 13,544 new infections and 221 Covid-19 deaths. No European country now has a higher incidence than Portugal, whose health system is on the verge of collapse. To understand how blatant these numbers are: extrapolated to Germany, that would be a 7-day average of more than 110,000 new infections and around 1,800 deaths per day. And such a development would actually also be possible in this country. Christian Drosten warned in an interview with “Spiegel” of a third wave with up to 100,000 cases daily.
