A week before the US election, ex-President Barack Obama accused his successor Donald Trump of failing again in the fight against the corona pandemic. “He screwed it up,” said the Democrat during a campaign appearance in the city of Orlando in the embattled US state of Florida. “We’re the biggest, wealthiest, most powerful country in the world, and somehow we can’t get this under control because our government hasn’t done its job,” Obama said. More effective government action could have saved thousands of lives, he said. President Trump “ignored” the pandemic and refused to take responsibility for it, said Obama. “But guess what, that’s not how the job works. You have to be in charge around the clock,” he said. “Watching TV all day and inventing things doesn’t solve any problems,” said Obama, referring to Republican Trump.
