Australia’s borders have been closed to visitors for months. Travel between the individual states is also largely prohibited. The airline Qantas is now offering a sightseeing flight over the country. Flying in Corona times: In view of the multiple travel restrictions due to the pandemic, the Australian airline Qantas has started a sightseeing flight over its own country with 150 passengers. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner took off in the morning from Sydney International Airport, where it was to land again seven hours later. The flight route initially led north along the coasts of the states of New South Wales and Queensland and then to the famous island mountain Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) in the center of the fifth continent. Through the Dreamliner’s large windows, passengers should be able to marvel at sights such as Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, and Sydney Harbor from above.

The twin-engine Boeing 787 is actually a long-haul jet. Before take-off, Captain Alex Passerini said that the crews had flown over the sights many times, but at the usual altitude of 35,000 feet (10,700 meters). During the scenic flight, it should go down to 4,000 feet at some points. “We will level the plane so that passengers on both sides have a great view, especially of Uluru, after we have received special overflight permits,” said Passerini. According to the consumer organization ACCC, the number of air passengers in April fell by 95 percent compared to the same month last year. The tickets for the sightseeing flight were sold out in no time.
