No IS executioner at the microphone – “New York Times” falls for swindlers – today – 20-1

In a podcast in the New York Times, an alleged Islamist describes his acts of violence in IS. The podcast is a success, winning several awards. But now it turns out: the man is not a terrorist, he was probably never even in Syria. US President Trump exults. The “New York Times” had to admit serious mistakes in a successful podcast about the jihadist militia Islamic State (IS): The renowned US newspaper apparently fell for a swindler who had posed as an IS fighter. The newspaper now wrote that the podcast “Caliphate” (Caliphate) had “given too much faith” to the false or exaggerated descriptions of “one of the central figures”. “NYT” editor-in-chief Dean Baquet spoke of “institutional failure”. “Caliphate” aired in 2018. A self-proclaimed former IS fighter with the war name Abu Huzayfah takes up a large part of the award-winning twelve-part podcast. The Pakistani-born Canadian with the real name Shehroze Chaudhry described, among other things, with gruesome details, how he executed two people in Syria. He also reported that IS fighters used puppets to train them to kill.

In September, however, Chaudhry was arrested in Canada for feigning terrorist activity. The “New York Times” then opened internal investigations into the case.
The podcast stays online

A team of reporters could not find any independent evidence that the man was an IS executioner in Syria, said “NYT” editor-in-chief Baquet now. According to the research, it is even likely that Chaudhry was never in Syria. “I think this guy was a swindler who made up most, if not everything, of what he told us,” said Baquet.

The conclusion of the scandal “Spiegel” presents a report on the Relotius case

The editor-in-chief admitted serious negligence in reviewing the story. The podcast is not withdrawn, but given context. The journalist in charge, Rukmini Callimachi, is staying with the “New York Times”, but is no longer supposed to write about terrorism topics for the time being. She is a “good reporter,” said Baquet. Callimachi apologized on Twitter for the errors in the podcast. The case caused malice among the outgoing US President Donald Trump, about whom the “New York Times” repeatedly reports critically. “Oh, they do this to me every day,” wrote Trump on Twitter. “When are you going to apologize?”
