More than a million corona tests are carried out in France within a week. The result is sobering. The numbers suggest that the second wave is already well underway. With almost 9,000 new infections detected within 24 hours, France has reached a new record since the start of the corona pandemic. According to the health authority, 8975 new infections were reported within one day by Friday evening. This is the highest level since the first proven corona case in March. „In France, virus circulation is developing exponentially,“ warns Santé Publique France. „The strong growth momentum in transmission is worrying.“ According to the health authority, more than a million corona tests were carried out within a week. The proportion of positive tests rose from 4.0 to 4.5 percent within a week. For comparison: In Germany, the positive rate has decreased to 0.74 percent despite significantly expanded testing. France has been struggling with a worrying increase in the number of corona infections for some time. With almost 30,700 deaths, France is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic in Europe.

The government has already classified 21 departments in the country as risk areas. There is an increased risk of infection there. These so-called red zones are mainly – but not exclusively – on the Mediterranean coast and around the capital Paris. A travel warning from the federal government applies to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region on the Mediterranean Sea as well as to the greater Paris area. Many fear that such a travel warning could spread to all of France. The rising numbers are already having an impact on several educational institutions. A few days after lessons started again, 22 schools in France and an overseas department have already been closed due to the corona epidemic.
