In France, too, people have to adjust to new measures: According to Head of State Macron, strict contact restrictions will apply from Friday in order to break the second corona wave in the country. In contrast to the spring, he wants to keep the schools open. With exit restrictions across the country, France is stepping up its fight against the second wave of the corona pandemic. The restrictions are to apply from Friday, announced President Emmanuel Macron in a televised address. The 42-year-old made it clear that the restrictions are less stringent than in the spring, when public life in the country was largely paralyzed. So the schools should stay open. However, bars and restaurants have to close. The measures are initially limited to December 1st. “Stay at home as much as possible,” Macron appealed to his compatriots. Macron made it clear that the situation is dire. “We are being overwhelmed by the accelerating epidemic,” he said. The development also affects other European countries. The new restrictions are not unexpected for the around 67 million French. Government spokesman Gabriel Attal had already promised a “new stage” before the speech by the head of state. “The second wave is here,” said the spokesman after a cabinet meeting. Everything must be done to avoid being overwhelmed by this wave.

Situation worsens

In the cabinet meeting, the head of state spoke of a massive, general and largely unexpected deterioration in Europe. Macron also discussed the corona situation twice within two days in a national security council. So far, a night curfew has applied to around two thirds of the population, i.e. around 46 million people. The corona situation in the country has been worsening dramatically for weeks. Most recently, over 36,400 new infections were counted within 24 hours. The number of deaths associated with the coronavirus rose significantly – on Tuesday evening the authorities reported 523. This returned to the high level of April. On Wednesday evening the authorities spoke of 244 dead, the total number is now almost 35,800. Spokesman Attal said that in two weeks ‘time a situation similar to that at the height of the first wave of epidemics is threatening in the hospitals’ intensive care units. At that time, the exit restrictions in France were among the strictest in Europe, schools were closed. Citizens then had to show certificates when they were checked on the street.

Attal said the health crisis was also triggering an economic and social crisis in the country. “We answer with strength,” he said. There are fears in the country that public-sector industries will be increasingly threatened with a lockdown. “In the hotel industry, gastronomy, culture, tourism and elsewhere, many who have so far held out as well as they can will no longer have the strength to face such a challenge a second time,” warned the conservative newspaper “Le Figaro”. The head of state had only addressed the citizens two weeks ago. At that time, he announced nightly curfews for Paris and other metropolitan areas. Later the center government of Prime Minister Jean Castex extended the restrictions to 54 départements and the overseas territory of French Polynesia. Criticism of the government’s crisis management came from the opposition. He had the impression of “constant improvisation,” wrote the influential Conservative MP Eric Ciotti on Twitter.
