A man who was shot dead by Colorado corrections officers on Wednesday has been identified.

Aaron Lang, 38, died of gunshot wounds and his death is being investigated as a homicide, according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner. Lang was pronounced dead at Denver Health Medical Center after being shot in the 1000 block of South Parker Road.

At about 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Colorado Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension Unit was serving an arrest warrant for Lang, who was wanted on an alleged parole violation, when the shooting happened.

“During the course of the encounter, the parolee appeared to aim a weapon at the officers,” DOC said in a Wednesday news release. “The officers fired their weapons, striking the parolee.”

Denver police, who were not on scene at the time of the shooting, but who are investigating the incident, said that the suspect was armed.

No officers were injured. The officers involved are on paid administrative leave, per DOC protocol,  while shooting is investigated.

Lang has an arrest record in Colorado dating back to 2000, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation data base. In 2008, he was convicted of felony assault and was sentenced to five years in prison. He was also convicted of escape from fugitive hold in the case and for a parole violation.

In 2017, Lang was found guilty in a Denver felony drug case and was sentenced to 30 months in prison. He was also found guilty in 2017 of felony assault and menacing domestic violence in a case out of Aurora.

In June, Lang was arrested by Pueblo police on suspicion of misdemeanor intimidation and harassment domestic violence, and misdemeanor resisting arrest. A parole violation and a parole hold were part of the Pueblo arrest, according to records.
