Across the country, Italians are defending themselves against the tightened corona measures of their government. Protests in several cities lead to arrests and injuries following acts of violence. Meanwhile, the government is promising economic aid with a “simple and fast process”. In Italy, thousands of people took to the streets to protest against the tightened measures in the fight against the corona pandemic. In several cities they demonstrated on Tuesday evening with “freedom” shouts against the early curfew for restaurants and other shops. The police used tear gas. The government in Rome has meanwhile announced economic aid of over five billion euros for the areas hardest hit by the pandemic. Economics Minister Roberto Gualtieri promised that the funds would be disbursed in a “simple and quick process”. The money should be in the accounts of those affected by mid-November, he added. It is intended for restaurants, taxi drivers and the entertainment industry, among other things. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced that his government passed the decree in a race against time. “There are people who suffer and can’t wait any longer,” he said.

Tremendous existential worries

Conte announced further restrictions on Sunday after another high number of corona infections. Cinemas, theaters and fitness studios have been closed for one month since Monday. The curfew for restaurants and bars has been brought forward to 6 p.m. There is a night curfew in several regions. Many landlords and other entrepreneurs as well as employees are now worried about their existence. These “painful measures” were necessary to prevent a total lockdown that would cause serious damage to the economy and society, said Conte. “If we respect these measures, there is a good chance we can face December with a certain calm,” he added, condemning the violence on the sidelines of the demonstrations.

Fascists also participated in protests

In Rome, several hundred people – including supporters of the neo-fascist Forza Nuova party – clashed with the police in the central Piazza del Popolo. As reported by the Ansa news agency, protesters set fire to trash cans and damaged parked bicycles and scooters. Protests against the stricter Corona measures had already taken place in several cities on Monday evening. There had been riots in Turin and Milan, with young people throwing incendiary bombs and stones at police vehicles and destroying shop windows. Italy was one of the most severely affected countries in the world by the pandemic during the first corona wave in spring. According to the Ministry of Health, more than 500,000 corona infections have been detected so far, and more than 37,000 people have died. On Tuesday, health officials registered almost 22,000 new infections.
