His body is a total work of art: Frenchman Sylvain Hélaine invested almost 60,000 euros to get a tattoo from head to toe. The primary school teacher advises against imitations. When Sylvain Hélaine approaches a new class as a teacher for the first time, there is often incredulous silence. „But when I introduce myself and they see that I’m a teacher like everyone else, it’s cool,“ says the 35-year-old. Helaine is a primary school teacher in Palaiseau near Paris – and France’s mostly tattooed man. Virtually no part of his body is left natural; He even had his tongue and the whites of his eyes punctured with a needle. Hélaine does not recommend imitating this, however: „That was pure torture – they keep your eyes open and you can feel the needle sticking into the white,“ he says. In addition, he had to travel to Switzerland specifically for this, as this eye surgery is prohibited in France. But without the tattoo, he just felt „incomplete,“ he says.

For the total body of art, Hélaine not only took pain: In the past eight years, he has also had a tattoo cost around 57,000 euros – and lived with his mother until three years ago because he couldn’t afford more of his teacher salary could. In the meantime, however, „Freaky Hoody“, as his stage name is, is a celebrity in the world of tattooed people, and his passion is slowly paying off financially as well: „Model agencies have hired me for films and television series,“ the 35-year-old proudly recounts . And well-known filmmakers would have been interested in him, including „Matrix“ director Lana Wachowski. His students also benefit from his appearance, Hélaine believes: „Children learn to be tolerant of others,“ he says. He hopes that as adults they will be „less racist or homophobic“ and „will not stare at disabled people as if they were a circus attraction“. Hélaine’s students seem to agree with him. „Nobody should judge him for his looks,“ says nine-year-old Gayane. „Only his eyes are scary – he’s very nice himself.“
