How is the President of the USA? Donald Trump would say: Something is wrong here or everything is fake news about him

Contradicting messages, an allegedly edited video, overt photos – even White House staff do not know if they are being told the truth about the president’s health. When it comes to Trump, only one thing is clear: something is wrong here. During the 2016 election campaign, Donald Trump kept whispering that something was wrong somewhere. “There’s something going on”, that was the phrase with which he spread his dark conspiracy stories. The fact that this president in particular is trusted to lie even about his own corona infection comes as no surprise in view of the many untruths that he constantly proclaims. The fundamental fact that he is ill is likely to be true because the infection is more likely to harm than good – it distracts from the fact that Trump is currently in the process of becoming another conservative judge at the Supreme Court with Amy Coney Barrett to bring the USA. Because from the point of view of Republicans and Conservative voters, she and the two other constitutional judges appointed by Trump are by far the greatest success of his presidency. If the appeal is successful (which is no longer one hundred percent certain even among Republican senators due to several corona infections), there will be a conservative majority in the Supreme Court for a very long time. Not only is Trump’s infection distracting from this success, it is also once again making the corona pandemic the focus of reporting. That harms Trump: For months, a majority of US citizens have disapproved of the president’s handling of the crisis. So let’s assume that Trump is really sick. Much more does not seem certain,

There are conflicting reports about the severity of his illness

First of all, the doctors expressed themselves so misleadingly to the journalists waiting in front of the hospital that Trump’s doctor Sean Conley later published a clarification. He did not want to say that Trump has been sick for 72 hours, but that this is the third day of his illness. The diagnosis is not 48 hours old either, but this is the second day of therapy.

It could be that Trump is signing a blank sheet of paper here.

Timing wasn’t the only thing there was confusion about. Conley did not give a clear answer to several questions as to whether Trump had been given additional oxygen at some point. He simply said that “now” and “today” are not. According to the Washington Post, Trump received supplemental oxygen on Friday before he was taken to the Walter Reed Military Hospital. After the doctors, Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, appeared before the journalists. What he said was not in direct contradiction to what Conley had said. But his tone was less optimistic. “We are not yet on a clear path to a full recovery,” he said, the state of the president in the past 24 hours was “very worrying”, the next 48 hours would be “critical”. The nature of the information also caused a stir: Meadows asked reporters not to give his name, but to attribute what he said to someone “who is familiar with the president’s health.” This is not uncommon. Then, however, a video appeared showing Meadows talking to the press. This made it clear: Trump’s own chief of staff is “concerned” about the state of the president. When Trump heard of Meadows’ statement, he got angry, reports the New York Times. He immediately wrote on Twitter that he was fine. A few hours later he posted a four-minute video in which he repeated this statement several times (here is a copy of the video).

Something is wrong with the video

It wasn’t long before a journalist noticed a strange passage in the video. Shortly after the first minute, when Trump utters the word “therapeutics” (drugs), he seems to choke briefly on a cursory glance. Christopher Orr tweeted that it was clearly a cut. Other users speculated that a coughing fit was edited out with a so-called morph cut. Morph cuts remove unwanted parts of a clip and then smooth out the break.

The photos should be posed

And then there are the photos that the White House published late on Saturday evening (local time) through photo agencies. They show Trump in different situations: Once he is sitting at a round table – apparently the same one at which the Twitter video was recorded. He’s wearing a jacket, seems to be working on a document, and has the kind of thick felt-tip pen in hand that he always signs with. In the other picture he is sitting at a larger table and is not wearing a jacket. Canadian journalist Jon Ostrower noticed that the photos were taken ten minutes apart. Ostrower relies on the so-called EXIF data in the image files, in which all possible information is stored – including the time of the picture. If the pictures were taken really in quick succession, that would be an argument that the situations are posed. (There is no evidence that they were not admitted to the Walter Reed Hospital.) Journalist Andrew Feinberg also took a closer look at the photos. Result: The enlargement of the picture on which Trump is holding the felt pen in his hand looks very much like the president is signing a white sheet of paper. Feinberg thinks it could be the same blank sheet of paper that is in the video in front of the president.

Even senior White House officials do not know if they are being told the truth

The unprofessional manner of communication by Trump’s chief of staff is criticized even in the White House, writes the Washington Post. The fact that Meadows wanted to speak to journalists anonymously was “no help,” said an employee of the newspaper, although he wanted to remain anonymous. Another said, “We have not communicated well with the public on this issue.” According to the report, some White House officials said they did not trust the information they received themselves. “I can tell you what I hear, but frankly I have no idea if that’s true,” the paper quotes a high-ranking source.

Giuliani has another message

In addition to the video, Trump has also reached out to the public through his friend and lawyer Rudy Giuliani. He told the New York Post that the president had dictated the following “statement” to him: “I feel like I can go out right away. But they tell me that this disease can always relapse. But I feel.” like I could go out and do a campaign rally.” Other passages of this message sound as if Trump wanted to suggest that he took the disease on himself to give US citizens courage. “I will defeat it (the virus). Then I can show people that we can deal responsibly with this disease, but we shouldn’t be afraid of it.” Whether Trump’s video has been edited, whether the photos have been placed, whether he is doing well or badly and whatever that means for dealing with the corona pandemic in the USA: In Trump’s world, in which facts do not matter, it is probably all the same. Only one thing is certain for sure: something is wrong.
