Hot Rockies host Dodgers, Giants with NL West title up for grabs

OK, so it’s not the playoffs, and there will be no Rocktober 2021. But the Rockies will play meaningful games this week at Coors Field.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants come to town with the National League West title up for grabs. The Giants (97-53) lead the Dodgers (96-54) by one game with 12 games remaining.

The Rockies, who are 45-27 at Coors Field, have a chance to mess things up.

Rocktember, anyone?

Veteran outfielder Charlie Blackmon isn’t buying it.

“It’s such a big deal to make it to the playoffs,” Blackmon said. “And nothing compares to the playoffs except for the playoffs.”

Maybe so, but playing the spoiler role is as close as the Rockies are going to get.

The Rockies host the Dodgers in a three-game series beginning Tuesday night, followed by a three-game weekend set against the Giants. All three teams have been playing well. The Rockies are fresh off a 7-2 road trip, their best since 2017. The Giants are 7-3 over their last 10 games, while the Dodgers are 8-2.

Manager Bud Black is excited to see how the Rockies perform under the spotlight.

“That’s what I love about baseball,” Black said. “Other teams are watching. Other teams care greatly about what’s going on outside of their own ballpark, because it impacts them.”

Right-hander Jon Gray, who’s scheduled to pitch against the Giants on Friday night, also wants to see how the Rockies measure up.

“When we play the Dodgers and the Giants, we get the best out of ourselves, so I’m excited to see how we do this week,” Gray said.

Gray’s enthusiasm is admirable, even if he didn’t quite get the facts right.

The Dodgers own an 11-5 record vs. Colorado this season, including a 5-2 record at Coors. Since Black became manager in 2017, the Rockies are 14-26 vs. L.A. in LoDo.

The Giants are 12-4 against the Rockies this season, including a 4-2 record at Coors. During Black’s tenure, however, the Rockies are 26-14 vs. the Giants at Coors.

The Dodgers-Rockies series features three intriguing pitching matchups. On Tuesday, the Dodgers are scheduled to start lefty Julio Urias (18-3, 2.99 ERA), while the Rockies will go with right-hander Antonio Senzatela (4-9, 4.06). The raw numbers spell mismatch, but Senzatela is on the best streak of his career. The right-hander has pitched at least six innings in 12 of his last 14 starts, posting a 3.57 ERA.

Wednesday’s game features right-hander Walker Buehler (14-4, 2.39), L.A.’s Cy Young Award candidate vs. Rockies right-hander German Marquez (12-10, 4.16), who’s a first-time all-star.

Thursday’s afternoon game matches Max Scherzer (14-4, 2.17), the Dodgers’ other Cy Young candidate, against lefty Kyle Freeland (6-8, 4.50). Freeland tossed six shutout innings on Saturday at Washington.

The Rockies, of course, would love to play spoiler, but the ever-steady Blackmon said he’ll approach this week’s games the way he approaches every game.

“I pretty much try my hardest to do my best every game, no matter what the opponent is,” Blackmon said. “I’m not turning it up a notch. My notches are already up.”
