Gap between the positions of the EU and the UK – today 20-1

Fishing rights are one of the controversial issues in the EU’s trade talks with the UK. If the negotiations fail, there will be a hard Brexit. Out of caution that EU fishermen could then fish in British waters, London puts several navy vessels on standby. One day before the expected decision in the struggle for a post-Brexit deal, Britain put armed naval vessels on standby to protect its fishing waters. The move is part of a government contingency plan in case talks with Brussels about a trade deal fail on Sunday. The UK and EU negotiators, meanwhile, met again in Brussels to usher in what may be the final hours of trade talks.

Is the no-deal Brexit coming? British consumers face a “tariff bomb”

Four 80-meter-long ships of the Royal Navy have been put in readiness to protect the British territorial waters from EU fishermen if no agreement is reached. “It is perfectly appropriate for the Royal Navy to protect our waters when the position is that we are a sovereign state and the government says we do not want other nations’ fishing boats there,” retired Admiral Alan West said on the radio the BBC. Prime Minister Boris Johnson had kept expectations of an agreement low last week: it was “very, very likely” that the talks would fail and that Great Britain would trade with the EU on the terms of the World Trade Organization (WTO). EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had also prepared the EU heads of state and government for the possibility of the talks failing.

Maas does not give up hope

Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas was convinced that despite the very short time remaining for a Brexit agreement, there is still a chance of an agreement between the EU and the British government. “An agreement is getting more difficult every day, but it is still possible,” Maas told the newspapers of the Funke media group. “That is why we as the EU continue to negotiate as long as the window is open even a crack.” However, despite being “willing to compromise”, the EU must also keep an eye on its interests. Great Britain left the EU on February 1, but the country will remain in the EU internal market and the customs union until the end of the year. During this transition phase, it has not yet been possible to negotiate a trade agreement for the period after Brexit. Without an agreement, customs duties would be levied in mutual trade at the turn of the year, with serious consequences for the economy.

The time to ratify an agreement in good time by the end of the year is now extremely short. The main points of contention in the negotiations continue to be a fair playing field, control of a future agreement and fishing rights for EU fishermen in UK waters.
