The Denver Pioneers hockey team came up short against Providence College Friday night, losing 6-5 to the Friars on the road.

Denver and Providence battled it out in the first period with both teams coming up empty on the scoreboard. After the scoreless first, Denver rattled off four goals in the second with scores from Justin Lee, Cole Guttman, Cameron Wright and Mike Benning. The Friars tallied one of their own with a power play goal from Max Crozier.

The Pios held the lead most of the evening but the defense faded away in the third as the Friars rallied with five goals in the period.

Providence’s Nick Poisson got a trio of goals in the third for a hat trick. Brett Berard was credited with the game-winning goal, scoring with 1:01 left in regulation.

The Pios look to end their road trip on a high note as they take on Boston College at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
