Despite the high Corona numbers, thousands celebrate in Times Square in New York

Corona Dead

The world is slipping into the new year: As always, the South Seas will kick off. New Zealand, Sydney, China and Moscow follow. There is also the famous “Ball Drop” in New York. At the party in Times Square, an audience is again allowed. But the pandemic remains the dominant topic.

Despite record-breaking corona infection numbers, New York’s Times Square welcomed the year 2022 with an audience again. At midnight, a shining crystal ball traditionally slid down a flagpole and heralded the new year to the cheers of thousands – the so-called “ball drop”. The event on the world-famous square in Manhattan was limited to about a quarter of its normal capacity this year, after only a few invited guests were allowed to attend last year. Everyone present had to be fully vaccinated.

The New York New Year’s Eve traditions were not lacking this year either: It was raining confetti and the song “New York, New York” echoed through the streets. Usually around a million people flock to Times Square each year, and the party is one of the biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world. Millions of Americans watch the big show on television every year – this year there was, among other things, an appearance by singer KT Tunstall.

The major event has its origins in the opening of a new publishing house for the “New York Times” in 1904 – the newspaper celebrated this with a New Year’s Eve fireworks display. This time the celebrations took place under the impression of the rapidly spreading omicron variant of the coronavirus. Most recently, the number of infections in the US east coast metropolis rose by leaps and bounds. The number of hospital admissions also went up.
