Being overweight increases the risk of severe Covid 19 disease. A Mexican with a body weight of 200 kilograms and numerous previous illnesses therefore had little chance of survival. But he doesn’t just surprise himself. Juan Pedro Franco once weighed 595 kilograms and was entered in the 2017 Guinness Book of Records as the heaviest man in the world. What was a dubious honor back then has now become an extreme risk in times of the corona pandemic.

Heaviest man wants to lose 295 kilos within a year

And in fact, Franco fell ill with the Covid-19 disease caused by the virus, reports Mexican media. He had previously reduced his weight to 208 kilograms. Nevertheless, he was still extremely overweight, and there were also previous illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and a chronic lung disease. All of this made it difficult for him to fight coronavirus infection after testing positive a month ago. Franco, who lives in the central Mexican state of Aguascalientes, said he suffered from fever, body pain, headaches and breathing difficulties. “It’s a very aggressive disease,” he said. A quarter of the more than 74,000 people in Mexico who died as a result of the coronavirus infection were overweight, according to official figures.

Franco is an exceptional patient

“Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are more prone to serious complications,” confirmed Dr. José Antonio Castañeda, the head of the team that treats Franco’s obesity. “The chances that they will survive are very slim.” However, his patient was the exception. The 36-year-old defeated the coronavirus. Franco is convinced that his years of weight loss and physical exercises, as well as the operations to reduce the size of his stomach, would have helped him overcome the infection. Prior to these procedures, he was bedridden because his immense weight prevented him from moving. Nevertheless, the disease left its mark on his family. Franco’s mother died of Covid-19. According to local media, the 66-year-old had supported her son in adhering to his diet.
