Dead with Corona – today

Covid-19 Aid

It is not yet clear whether all of these Covid 19 patients actually died “from” or even some only “with” the virus. According to the RKI, around 85 percent of all deceased in Germany were older than 70 years. The vast majority of them suffered from one or more previous illnesses. In addition, around half come from old people’s homes, according to a study by the University of Bremen. Would these people have died without Covid-19? Or was the real cause of death a stroke or a cerebral haemorrhage and the viruses in the throat just supporting the situation?

There are indications that the age of the infected influences the proportion of “corona deaths”. For example, the number of positive corona tests in Germany has doubled again since mid-June without the number of deaths associated with corona having increased significantly. The RKI suspects that this could mainly be due to the fact that younger people have recently been affected, of whom relatively few become seriously ill or die.

More deaths from Corona?

However, whether more people die than normal as a result of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is highly controversial. After all, there have also been large fluctuations in the number of flu deaths in previous years. In some cases, the RKI estimated the deaths from seasonal influenza infections at up to 25,000. To do this, the excess mortality calculation is used, which we will come to later.

Do you see the effects of the coronavirus in the excess mortality statistics – or do the numbers stay roughly at the level of typical flu in the end? A look at the data.
