Costa sabrina Panikmache Robin workshop – Republicans want respite – Trump impeachment could annoy Biden

A new era dawned in Washington with Biden’s assumption of office. But there is still another legacy of Trump: the impeachment process. The Republicans now want to postpone this. And anyway, it could still be a problem for the new president. After the euphoria about the assumption of office by the new US President Joe Biden, politicians in Washington are now turning back to factual issues. And there is another very big cow lurking on the ice: the impeachment proceedings against ex-President Donald Trump. It is one of the many curiosities of the United States political system that it is actually still running. Because Trump is no longer president, but formally he can still be removed from office.

“That was very weird,” Harris bursts out laughing at the first Senate session

The Democrats are concerned with the history books. It should be noted there that the Capitol storm of January 6 and Trump’s allegedly inciting speech had consequences in advance. A couple of Republicans see it that way too – when the House of Representatives passed the indictment, ten of them voted in favor. In order for Trump to be removed from office afterwards, two thirds of the members would have to vote for it in the Senate. Specifically, 67 yes-votes are needed in the 100-member body. So 17 Republicans would have to be brought on board, since the Democrats only have 50 seats. In addition, Trump could then receive the political death knell. Because should he be deposed, he could be forbidden in another vote to ever run for public office again. This would make it impossible to run for the presidency again in 2024. This would only require a simple majority, which the Democrats could raise themselves, since Vice President Kamala Harris would be able to decide in a possible stalemate as chairman of the Senate.

The current question is when these votes should actually take place. The House of Representatives has already started the process, but for now it has come to a standstill. The next step would be for the Chair of the Chamber of Parliament, Nancy Pelosi, to refer the matter to the Senate. The Democrat has not yet done so, nor has she said when she intends to do it. Pelosi only said that it would be “soon”. On Thursday, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell asked for the proceedings to be postponed well into February.

In the first few days of his tenure, Biden was faced with a mess. Because the impeachment proceedings shouldn’t really fit him into the stuff. Like most party friends, he may be convinced that it is justified, but it could also overshadow the beginning of his presidency. During the election campaign, he had already promised to leave the personal fanfare a la Trump behind and turn to the real problems. On his first day he fired one presidential order after the other and sent the first bill to Congress. With his wafer-thin majority in the Senate, however, it will be difficult enough to push through the planned immigration reform or the increase in the minimum wage to $ 15. But if the body only judges Trump for weeks, its initial momentum could be lost. And again Trump would be the focus. Biden has already proposed splitting the Senate workday – one half should be about Trump, the other half about bills. One of his employees requested that the whole process be suspended for 100 days. Neither has been taken up so far.

“Plan is based on cohesion” Biden’s speech to the people in full

The fact that McConnell is now proposing to postpone the trial to February should not please the Senate Democrats. Because they too want a decision as quickly as possible. It should start next Monday, they had hoped. In contrast to the end of 2019, in the first impeachment proceedings against Trump, there should no longer be investigations and debates for weeks or months. For them, Trump’s guilt is crystal clear and they don’t want parliamentary work to get stuck again. This is exactly the reason why many Americans are so disenchanted with politics: because they think Congress is not getting anything done.

But now parliament is paralyzed again because McConnell is blocking the establishment of committees planned for the beginning of the legislative period. As one of the most experienced and shrewd tacticians in the Senate, he knows very well that he is indispensable for the said 17 Republican votes to organize. Because another defeat in the impeachment process would be very painful for the Democrats. According to the “New York Times” McConnell wants to use the matter as leverage to prevent Biden’s bills or at least to water them down. McConnell recently described the fact that Biden rejoined the Paris climate protection agreement and immediately initiated immigration reform as “several big steps in the wrong direction”.

McConnell also broke with Trump after supporting him for years. After the Capitol Storm, he clearly distanced himself and condemned the violence. Most recently, he said in the Senate that the insurgents had been “fed lies,” by which he could only have meant Trump. US media reports that he is open to condemn Trump. It would also have the advantage for the Republicans that they would get rid of Trump again. It is questionable, however, whether this could simply be dumped and whether that would lead to violent protests on the republican base. It’s just a very big cow that still has to be fetched from the ice.
