So far, little is known about the properties of the new Corona variant in Great Britain. At least it seems to be more contagious than previous forms. But is it also a problem for Covid-19 vaccines? According to experts, there is no need to be very concerned about this. According to experts, the effectiveness of the corona vaccine will probably not be significantly affected by the new variant of the virus that has appeared in Great Britain. “I don’t see any reason for alarm at the moment,” said Richard Neher from the Biozentrum of the University of Basel.

With the doses ordered so far, Germany could vaccinate 70 million citizens

Andreas Bergthaler from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (CeMM) in Vienna does not consider the current development to be “incredibly alarming” either. It is not unusual for mutations to appear. At the moment it is not known whether the observed changes have a decisive influence on the properties of the pathogen. A coranavirus variant has been spreading in the south-east of England for a few weeks, which, according to initial findings, is more contagious than previous variants. That this variant spreads faster is basically plausible, said Neher. If this is confirmed, much stricter measures are necessary to contain the spread of the corona virus as desired. But it is also conceivable that the current increased spread of this variant is ultimately a coincidence and goes back to a superspreading event, for example. With a view to the effectiveness of the vaccination, the experts emphasize that the vaccine creates an immune reaction against several virus characteristics. Changes in individual characteristics would therefore not lead to the immune system no longer recognizing the pathogen, said Neher. But you have to watch the further dynamic closely.

World Doctors President “rather not” worried

According to World Doctors President Frank Ulrich Montgomery, the mutation of the coronavirus does not call into question the previous vaccination strategy. In an interview with the Funke media group, he referred to the statements of the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, according to which the mutated virus is more contagious, but is covered by the vaccines. The flu vaccination also varies from year to year, depending on the “virus cocktail”: “That can also happen to us with the coronavirus,” said Montgomery. He was “rather not” worried. Britain had started mass vaccination a week and a half ago. As of Saturday morning, about 350,000 people had received the vaccine, Premier Johnson said. Health Secretary Hancock said half a million people would probably be cared for by evening.
